Coda: Reading the Ending Section

Written by Seiya Matsushita · Pivo Music School

Lesson 14 explains the Coda. It is closely related to D.C., which we introduced in lesson 13. If you have not studied D.C. yet, it helps to read that lesson first.

Let us start with an example containing a coda instruction.

The symbols may not be clear at first, so let us explain what a coda means.

Coda

1. “Coda” means an ending section.
2. After a return such as D.C., when you reach To Coda, jump forward to the section marked Coda, skipping the intervening measures.

With this rule in mind, look at the score again.

The following illustration traces the order in which the directions are followed.

Labeling the measures with letters gives us:

A → B → C → D → E → F → A → B → C → G → H
