D.S. (Dal Segno): Returning to the Sign

Written by Seiya Matsushita · Pivo Music School

In lesson 15 we study D.S. (Dal Segno). While D.C. tells you to return to the beginning, D.S. sends you back to the measure marked with the segno sign.

What does the segno sign look like?

It resembles a stylized letter S with extra strokes and dots. This is the segno sign.

Here is an example of the sign in a score.

Let us summarize the instruction:

D.S. = Dal Segno

Instruction: Return to the segno sign.
Placement: Below the staff.

As a review, let us also revisit Fine.

Fine

Instruction: End the piece here after a return by D.C. or D.S.
Placement: Below the staff.

Now look at the score again and follow the directions in order.

The resulting order is:

A → B → C → D → E → F → C → D
